IELTS Speaking

A face-to-face conversation with an examiner in three parts, 11–14 minutes.

The Speaking test is a recorded conversation with a certified examiner.

The three parts

  • Part 1 (4–5 minutes): introduction and questions about familiar topics such as home, work, studies and interests.

  • Part 2 (3–4 minutes): you get a task card, have one minute to prepare, then speak for up to two minutes.

  • Part 3 (4–5 minutes): a deeper discussion of ideas connected to the Part 2 topic.

How you are assessed

  • Fluency and coherence

  • Lexical resource (vocabulary)

  • Grammatical range and accuracy

  • Pronunciation

Tips

  • Give full answers with reasons and examples, not just "yes" or "no".

  • In Part 2, use the minute to note key words, not full sentences.

  • If you don't understand a question, it's fine to ask the examiner to repeat it.
