IELTS Writing (Academic)

Two tasks in 60 minutes: describe a visual, then write an essay.

Task 1 (about 20 minutes)

You describe and summarise information shown in a graph, table, chart, map or process diagram in at least 150 words. You report the main trends and comparisons — you don't give your opinion.

Task 2 (about 40 minutes)

You write an essay of at least 250 words in response to a point of view, argument or problem. Task 2 carries more weight than Task 1, so give it more time.

How you are assessed

  • Task achievement / task response

  • Coherence and cohesion

  • Lexical resource (vocabulary)

  • Grammatical range and accuracy

Tips

  • In Task 1, start with an overview of the main trends.

  • In Task 2, answer every part of the question and give a clear position.

  • Plan for 3–5 minutes before you write, and leave time to check your work.
