IELTS Writing (General)

Two tasks in 60 minutes: write a letter, then write an essay.

Task 1 (about 20 minutes)

You write a letter of at least 150 words about an everyday situation — for example, asking for information, making a complaint or explaining a problem. The letter may be formal, semi-formal or informal, depending on who you are writing to.

Task 2 (about 40 minutes)

You write an essay of at least 250 words in response to a point of view, argument or problem. The topics are general and do not need specialist knowledge.

How you are assessed

  • Task achievement / task response

  • Coherence and cohesion

  • Lexical resource (vocabulary)

  • Grammatical range and accuracy

Tips

  • In Task 1, cover all three bullet points in the question.

  • Choose the right tone: "Dear Sir or Madam" for formal letters, a first name for friends.

  • In Task 2, organise your essay into clear paragraphs with an introduction and a conclusion.
